I was diagnosed with depression a few months ago by my Doctor.
I had no idea I was depressed; I thought I was lacking vitamins or just exhausted.
Every morning, I couldn’t get myself out of bed, and I didn’t understand why, so I had blood tests to try to understand why I was so tired all the time.
When my results came back clear, and my Doctor told me I had depression, I was in disbelief. I was convinced it was something else. This was not a label I was ready to accept.
I am a 38 year old Mum of two teenage boys. I have a good courier and a loving family so being diagnosed with depression left me feeling very confused.
So I insisted on a second opinion, and then a third and fourth. They all diagnosed me with depression. I was devastated! I have never had depression before, or knew anyone with it, or had it.
When my primary Doctor suggested therapy and antidepressant medication, I was hesitant. I didn’t want this to be on my medical record, for others to see. I’m a private person, and this worried me.
So, after initally not accepting my Doctor’s advice, I decided to learn more about depression online so I could understand why I have depression and what has caused it, etc.
I spent weeks scouring Reddit pages and seeking advice or guidance from others in a similar position. And just as I was about to give up and accept my Doctor’s advice, I met Stuart.

I had no one else to talk to about my depression, as I didn’t want to burden my friends and family with it. I know they would help me, but I suppose I was embarrassed, and I certainly did not want people to judge me and forever label me as the daughter/mother/sister who had depression.
Stuart and I have never met. I live in Lincolnshire and Stuart lives in London, so we are many miles apart. However, it feels like I have known him forever and can now proudly say he is a friend for life.
Stuart’s genuine concern for my well-being, considering I was a stranger to him, was amazing! The fact that he kept in touch, and if he didn’t hear from me for days, he would always message me to check I was ok.

He is extremely patient with me, kind, and also hilarious, which helps me a great deal. I smile again!
He has also shared his personal life stories with me, which were fascinating and gave me the confidence to know that things do and will get better. And, was he right!
Stuart also would occasionally sends me voice notes, which were and are still helpful when there was is much to explain. I would listen to these on the dog walk with my headphones on. These were a great help! I enjoyed listening to them and still do.
Thanks to Stuart’s unwavering support, I can now get out of bed every morning and laugh, smile, and be the person I used to be. His kindness and understanding have helped me regain my confidence and I am so grateful to him for helping me get there. My journey is a testament to the fact that with the right support, recovery from depression is possible, and I hope it inspires others to seek help.
I can’t express enough how grateful I am to Stuart. He’s been a lifeline, and I’m in a much better place now, all thanks to him.
